Ladies! Let’s chat.

Have you ever wondered if it is easier for the fellas to lose weight? Let me tell you my opinion on this subject, and how these thoughts could potentially be holding you back from getting the body and health you deserve. Sound good? Cool ☺

So let’s just get this out of the way… Testosterone!

Men have much higher testosterone levels than women. This hormone helps them put on lean muscle mass, which helps them metabolize calories at a higher rate, or burn more fat. But it also makes them hairy and gives them deep voices, among other things, so you’re just peachy without it! Also note that over time, their advantage for weight loss seems to level out with that of women, so don’t get discouraged if you start a new weight loss plan with your hubby (or boy toy) and he drops a quick 10-you will catch up!

Men and women have different physiology.

Well I hope you were already aware of that at least. ☺ One advantage for the ladies is that they tend to store fat in more trendy places, like the buns and thighs! Also note that fat storage location does differ from person to person, so you can’t compare to others. Men tend to store and lose fat almost immediately from their guts, which can give them an appearance of quicker weight loss. So ladies, even if you don’t see a rapid change in your stomach, be sure to pay attention to other areas as well when trimming up fat. I strongly suggest taking photos every month or so to be able to compare your progress over time. After all, it’s hard to notice changes when we are seeing ourselves everyday.

And the body fat thing!

Back to the physiology, I have to point out that even an extremely healthy female will naturally carry about 6-11% more body fat than a healthy male. This is not extra fat, but just part of your physiology. Y’all are made differently ☺ So no comparing your body fat percentages to men! Please and thank you.

Caloric needs for weight loss, men vs. women

Dudes are bigger, in general. So they get to eat a bit more food. I’m sorry ladies, I’m truly sorry. But the truth is the more that we weigh, the higher our metabolic rates are and the more calories we burn. So by default, men burn more calories from being on average bigger than women. However, a faster metabolic rate means a bigger appetite so it’s a double edged sword.

That one thing that happens every month.

Well ladies, I know I haven’t experienced this myself, but I have been around enough women to know that when it’s 2 o’clock in the afternoon and you feel that you are going to DIE if you don’t dive into a pint of Ben and Jerry’s New York Super Fudge Brownie within 15 minutes, shit’s real.

This is something I have to bring up though. One week of binging and giving in big to your cravings can wash away the progress of the 3 prior weeks, so you have to be careful!

Plan ahead, arm yourself, and be aware that it is a mental battle that you CAN conquer!

Rid your house of sweets and arm yourself with healthy snacks! Chopped up veggies, fresh fruit, hummus, boiled egg whites, etc. These will be a lifesaver. I believe in you!

So, what do you make of all this?

Overall, it’s not fair to compare yourself to men, or to anyone for that matter. With health and fitness, we are all on our own unique journey, and your body is different than everyone else’s. You are your own competition, and every bit of progress counts. Focus on losing your first 5 pounds, give yourself a nice pat on the back, and then move forward to the next 5. And please, please, please, DO remember you are own your own path. You can look at IG models and Fitness celebs for motivation, but be careful about what thoughts you are putting in your head. With persistence, you will continue to improve, feel great, and look freaking awesome. I promise.

And finally it is VERY important that we are careful about what stories we are creating in our own minds. For example, if you believe that it is easier for men to lose weight than women, what subconscious beliefs are you forming about your own weight loss? Picking up what I’m putting down? You are programming yourself, subconsciously, to believe that weight loss is harder for you. And I GUARANTEE that if you build that belief, it will be harder. So don’t do it 😉
