Coconut oil can be used for soooo many different things other than cooking. Most people’s favorite uses for coconut oil include makeup remover, facial moisturizer, natural shaving cream and many more. Since I am a huge coconut oil lover I wanted to share with you some of my favorite ways to use coconut oil that I have researched and found work best!
If you think I’m missing some major coconut oil hacks comment below and let me know what I’m missing out on!
1. Hydrating Deep Conditioner
As someone who has struggled with dry and frizzy hair my entire life I can’t always afford to visit a salon to get the deep conditioning treatment that I need. When I read that you could do this at home with coconut oil I was all about giving it a try! All you have to do is mix about two tablespoons of coconut oil with one cup of hot water and let it settle. Once it has settled massage it onto you scalp, tie your hair up and put on a shower cap, let it sit for about an hour. Once it has rested on your hair for an hour, rinse with warm water and voila! You are on your way to shinier, smoother hair.
2. Sooth Your Sunburns
I am pale, pale, pale so if I spend any time in the sun (whether or not I have my sunscreen on) I will most likely come home to a burn on some part of my body. Coconut oil has the same affect on your skin as aloe vera when you have a sunburn! The best part about it is coconut oil is a cheaper option because you probably already have some lying around the house. Just rub it directly onto your burn and it will soothe and help heal the burn all at the same time!
3. Helps to Heal Your Scars
I had surgery on my leg once and once the stitches had been taken out and the wound had healed what was left behind was a nasty scar that made me self conscious around anyone while in a bathing suit. My doctor suggested rubbing coconut oil on it to help the scar tissue heal. Coconut oil has a ton of Vitamin E and antioxidants in it so they help to heal and smooth out your skin for a clearer complexion. Now, this may not get rid of all scars, mine was pretty bad to begin with and is still there but since using the coconut oil it has become much less noticeable and has gone down in size!
4. Use it to Create Your Own Organic Toothpaste
Did you know that if you mix coconut oil with baking soda you have made your own all natural, organic toothpaste? That’s it. Just two simple ingredients. You can rest easy knowing what is being used to clean your teeth with this recipe. Try it out. You won’t regret it!
5. Remove Gum that is Stuck in Hair
Now this is a use you’re all probably wondering how I found out about. How did a grown woman get gum stuck in her hair? I did not. But as a nanny to three children under the age of 10 when the youngest boy came to me with gum stuck in his hair I knew I needed to find a way to get it out without cutting it out and without having to explain to his mother how it got there while I wasn’t paying attention. I pulled out my phone, hopped on Google and within seconds found an article about coconut oil helping to remove gum from hair. I ran to the kitchen, found the oil, and rubbed it onto the hair surrounding the gum and on the gum itself. After a few minutes of this the hair started freeing itself from the gum and I was able to pull it out with only a few strands of hair still caught in it. I gave him a quick shower and all was well!
These are only 5 ways to that I have found work well for me. There are MILLIONS of ways people say you can use coconut oil in your daily life. I haven’t tried them all but these are the few that I continue to use pretty frequently.
